FRMT (Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation)

Access to higher education is one of the major concerns at national and international levels. For this reason, in June 2005 the Rigoberta Menchu Tum Foundation (FRMT) from Guatemala has signed an agreement with the University of Quintana Roo (UQROO), the Ford Foundation (FF) and the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES). This was done in order to develop a feasible study for the implementation of a pilot project based on the Programa de Apoyo a Estudiantes Indígenas en Instituciones de Educación Superior, PAEIIES (Supporting Program for Indigenous Students and Higher Education Institutions) administered by ANUIES. A total of three hundred fifty thousand pesos was granted to this pilot project by the Ford Foundation which would be used in about two years. The following objectives were established:

1. -To identify initiatives and educational strategies which contribute to increase the indigenous students´ participation in higher education systems in Mexico and Guatemala.

2.-To assess about the feasibility and pertinence of developing and starting a pilot project in Guatemala based on PAEIIES which operates within ANUIES.

The international impact of the PAEIIES, specifically at the UQROO, resulted in the exchange of experiences among students. In addition, they have expressed their ideas and opinions by participating in the activities before mentioned.

The participation of other institutions in these activities generated their adhesion to the university work and their incorporation to the signature of a letter of intentions that made possible the academic exchange and the development of common projects among them.

The charity of many groups and the effort of both countries and institutions whose main objective is to promote higher education in indigenous young people contributed to the successful of this project.

Incorporated to the signed agreements among the UQROO, the ANUIES, the FF and the FRMT there is another general cooperation agreement between the UQROO and the FRMT whose main objective is to establish the bases that contribute to the development of programs that promote the interculturality, the education and the intercultural exchange among the participating institutions.

In order to reach the objective before mentioned, the institutions have promised to support one another according to their area of competence. One of the activities is to promote the participation of indigenous students in the Cultural Academic Interchange Program coordinated by Mexico and Guatemala. In addition, the research and practices made by students from both institutions are promoted.

Thanks to this collaboration agreement and the participation of Mexican and Guatemalan young people in the Meeting ofLatin-American Indigenous Young People for Peace and the Meeting of Young Leader People with Nobel Peace Prizes, the indigenous situation in the context of the Mayan Mesoamerican region will be discussed.
